A Faithful Course of Duty Run

Author: Gilbert A. Franke

The Word contained in human flesh
Was born in lowly manger creche,
And pleased with sinful man to dwell,
Has conquered sin and death and hell:
A life poured out, a good fight won,
a faithful course of duty run;
the Father’s will on earth was done.

The Spirit claimed an infant small
Who grew and learned to heed the call
To serve his Lord throughout his days,
In church and home in layman’s ways.
A life poured out, a good fight won,
a faithful course of duty run;
his life of service had begun.

The Word proclaimed in truth and deed
Soon claimed his heart for one more need;
As shepherd to a special flock
He gathered them around the Rock.
A life poured out, a good fight won,
a faithful course of duty run;
a life fulfilled makes service fun.

And now, sustained by God’s true Word,
We trust, O Lord, our prayers be heard;
This faithful servant bless and hold
For all his days within Your fold.
A life poured out, a good fight won,
a faithful course of duty run;
a faithful course of duty run.

Hymn # 576 My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less (L M and refrain)

Text:  2 Timothy 4:6-8 (NIV)
For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
